Description:
How can you balance career aspirations with developing and maintaining a government Value Program? Can you be both a successful Professional Engineer in your field and a Certified Value Specialist? Mike will discuss how he balanced his career aspirations and life goals while being active in the Value community. He will also discuss the intricacies of helping to develop and maintain a government value program with a mix of delivery methods on top of other work, including some lessons learned and tips others may benefit from. He will also discuss what lies ahead in the value world as he transitions into a post-retirement career.

Michael Pearsall graduated from Queen’s University at Kingston with a B.Sc.(hons.) in Civil Engineering in 1992. He started working for the Ministry of Transportation as a student in 1989 first in the Geotechnical lab and later in Construction. Mike worked for MTO for 34 years until retiring in mid-2025. His career has mainly been involved with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of highways. Mike has held various positions at the Ministry of Transportation culminating as the Manager of the Provincial Highway Design Office. Mike was involved with Value Engineering with the ministry since December 1996; he is one of the few Certified Value Specialists in Canada and the only one in the OPS since 2020. He is a Past-President of Value Analysis Canada and a Past-President for SAVE International. Due to his many student outreach volunteer activities Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) has made him a member of the Order of Honour and he has been named a Fellow of Engineers Canada.
