On March 9th, 2017, Value Analysis Canada – Western Group hosted its regular monthly dinner presentation featuring a presentation by James Tan and Darsh Nawaratna from the City of Edmonton Construction Services-Infrastructure Delivery, Integrated Infrastructure Services Department.
The presentation titled “Shop Layout Optimization Utilizing Function Analysis” demonstrated how value engineering was applied to conducting a shop layout optimization study for Edmiston Yard that houses a construction group including equipment services and supports. The study generated an optimized shop space layout plan featuring an optimum location for each piece of equipment based on the workflow, process needs, and optimum requirements for each functional need, to minimize recycling and movement crossing points. In addition to that, the study produced a plan to relocate the equipment from the old shop at the Coronation Yard to the new Edmiston Yard. The relocation plan included an optimized schedule of the equipment transfer with minimal disruption to the equipment services and supports to construction activities and a staging plan.
The event took place at the Fantasyland Hotel at West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton. Twenty-five attendees from provincial and municipal governments, as well as professionals and students, came out to the event.
